Packaging is one of the few remaining ways that tobacco companies can promote their products. In 2012 Smokefree South West will be launching a campaign to raise awareness of how eye catching tobacco packaging is used to attract the next generation of smokers and how the plain packaging of all tobacco can protect them from a lifetime of addiction.
We are launching a major campaign to combat the threat that illegal tobacco poses to our children and communities across the South West. This is a joint initiative between HMRC, Trading Standards, Local Authorities, NHS and other enforcement partners. This campaign is based on the excellent evidence based programme of work undertaken by Tobacco Free Futures in the North West.
This new campaign takes a different approach to Smokefree homes, warning of the dangerous toxins that linger in the home long after a cigarette has been extinguished. 1 million people (22%) in the South West light up themselves or allow others to in their homes.
Smokefree South West launched a major campaign targeting the 33% of smokers in the area, the highest in the country, who use hand rolling tobacco. The first of its kind, it highlighted its inherent health risks and dispelled the myths that have built up around it.
Smokefree South West is working alongside the South West's 14 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to lower the smoking rates amongst the patients, thousands of visitors to secondary care sites and the staff employed there. This includes our field leading very brief advice training, available here.
